Common Squirrel Pests in Ontario

Types of squirrels found in Ontario include:

1. Eastern Gray Squirrel: The Eastern Gray Squirrel is a common problem at bird feeders which can be a problem for many homeowners who want to feed birds. Eastern Gray Squirrels love birdseed. Adults tend to live to be about 6 years old if they do not get eaten by a predator. Their diet consists mainly of nuts, such as acorns, walnuts, and hazelnuts. As winter approaches, Eastern Gray Squirrels store their food in various areas so they have food for the winter

2. American Red Squirrel. The American Red Squirrel is widespread across Ontario. These pests have a reddish colour and white belly which makes them easy to identify. Their average lifespan is only 2.3 years, with a maximum lifespan of 8 years. They are smaller than the gray squirrel. Their diet consists of seeds from evergreen trees, bird eggs, acorns, hazelnuts, and sunflower seeds from backyard bird feeders. American Red Squirrels can chew through hard plastic to get to seed.

3. Flying Squirrels: These squirrels have folds of skin underneath their arms, called a patagium, which extends from their wrists to their ankles. This membrane allows these squirrels to “glide” from tree to tree, giving the impression that they are flying. Two types of flying squirrels found in Ontario are the Northern Flying Squirrel and Southern Flying Squirrel. These nocturnal rodents eat nuts and acorns, as well as insects, bird eggs, and tree sap. Southern Flying Squirrels are a bit smaller than the Northern Flying Squirrel. Southern Flying Squirrels often visit bird feeders at night, feeding on seeds and peanuts.

4. Fox Squirrels: Fox squirrels have a rusty belly and a black outline to their tail. They are diurnal  and spend more time on the ground than most other tree squirrels. These squirrels are most often found in forest areas, or in urban neighborhoods with trees. They flourish among walnut, pecan, oak, hickory, and pine trees, storing their nuts for winter. Fox squirrels have excellent vision and well-developed senses of hearing and smell. They use scent marking to communicate with other fox squirrels. These pests use human habitats for sources of food and nesting sites, settling in attics.
