Roach Removal
Cockroaches
Cockroaches – Repulsive and a Health Hazard!!
It is not uncommon to find cockroaches infesting homes, apartment buildings, as well as businesses where food is prepared and there are sanitation issues. When there is a roach infestation, the most effective way to get rid of these pests is to bring in a licensed roach exterminator.
About Cockroaches
Cockroaches are flattened, brownish, fast-running insects. They have long, slender antennae. The cockroaches that are considered to be pests include:
- American cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
- German cockroach (Blattella germanica)
- Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis)
- Brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa)
Cockroaches are active breeders. The roach has 3 life stages: egg, nymph, and adult. The female cockroach produces small, brown, bean-shaped egg cases. The female deposits the eggs in isolated areas. Several nymphs emerge from each egg case (15-20 normally but up to 40 with the German cockroach.) The nymphs are smaller than adults and do not have wings. The nymphs get larger and reside in the same areas as adults. Cockroaches often gather in unique areas, responding to collective odours in their fecal droppings. The droppings look like pepper-like specks. Roaches eat all human foods, plus many other things like hair, filth, waste, etc.
Cockroaches are more active at night. During the day, they generally remain hidden in cracks and dark areas. Depending on the species and extent of infestation, roaches may be found anywhere in the home. Their preferred living environment includes warm, dark, moist areas. They particularly like bathrooms and kitchens. At night, they leave their hiding spots to seek out food. Species such as the German cockroach are capable of producing several thousand offspring in less than a year which is why it is important to bring in a roach exterminator to get rid of an infestation.

Cockroach Infestation Risks
According to the World Health organization (WHO), cockroaches have been known to play a role as carriers of intestinal diseases, such as dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever. Cockroaches may contaminate food and transfer pathogens that cause food poisoning and other illnesses. Many people are also allergic to cockroach droppings and their shed skins. The allergens may cause sneezing, congestion, and watery eyes. These pests can also trigger asthma attacks from people who have this condition. According to the EPA, children are more susceptible to cockroach allergies than adults. Asthma triggered by cockroaches is common among children living in densely populated housing settings where there can be many roach infestations.

Roach Control
Maintaining cleanliness and sanitizing is an important way to prevent roach infestation since roaches thrive where moisture, food, and shelter are readily available. Spills and food waste should be cleaned up right away. Do not permit the build-up of dirty dishes and utensils. Loose food items should be stored in secure tight-fitting containers. Don’t allow garbage and food waste to accumulate. and discard cardboard boxes, newspapers, paper bags, and cartons.
