Bee Removal

Bees Too Close By Are A Nuisance And A Risk!

Bees are winged insects closely related to wasps and ants. The most widely known bee species, the western honey bee, is known for producing honey. There are over 16,000 known species of bees in seven families. Some species, including honey bees, bumble bees, and stingless bees, live in colonies while most species, including mason bees, carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, and sweat bees, are solitary. Honey bees are just one of 400 different types of bees in Ontario

Bee Stings

Bees can sting which is a risk to someone who is allergic to bee stings, and they can also harm children. Certain species can be very aggressive and sting a number of times, which could become dangerous. The bee’s stinger injects venom into the skin. The venom is what causes the symptoms. Allergic reaction symptoms to a bee sting include: breathing difficulties, hives that are red, itchy rash and spread to areas beyond the sting, swelling of the face, throat, or any part of the mouth or tongue, and wheezing or trouble swallowing. Severe pain or burning at the sting site lasts 1 to 2 hours.

About Bees

All bees belong to the insect or Super-family ‘Apoidea’. Bees live in colonies with one queen. Honey bees tend to be the bees we see flying around the outside of the hive. Bees build the honeycomb and protect the hive. A honey bee swarm may rest in a hanging clump while scout bees fly off to find a place to make a permanent nest.

The honey bee is the only social insect whose colony can survive many years. All honeybees are cooperative and social. The hive bees consist of three types.

1. Worker Bees:  Forage for pollen and nectar from flowers, build and protect the hive, as well as clean and circulate air by beating their wings.

2. Queen Bee:  She lays the eggs. The number of eggs laid by the queen is about 2,000 per day. If the queen dies, workers will produce a new queen by feeding one of the worker females a special food called ‘royal jelly’  which permits the worker to develop into a fertile queen.

3. Drones: The drone bees are male and do not have a sting. These bees use dances to communicate with each other about food sources.

Bees have a pair of large compound eyes covering most of the surface of the head. They also contain many sense organs that can detect touch, smell and taste, as well as small, hair-like mechanoreceptors that can detect movement of air. Their mouthparts are adapted for both chewing and sucking by having both a pair of mandibles and a long proboscis for sucking up nectar. Bees feed on nectar as an energy source and pollen for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for their larvae.

Bee Pest Control

Although bees are not seeking you out to sting you, they can become aggressive if they feel threatened. Over 95 percent of stings are from honey bees or yellow jackets. If the bees are unquestionably in an inconvenient spot and are causing worry, removal of a bee hive or bee swarm is best left to a professional pest bee control service.
